Something about the column's writer, Darryn KY Chiew Darryn KY Chiew is well known in 3rd KL especially with his peers as a 'walking BB dictionary'. Don't believe? Test him out! Darryn joined when he was 9 years old as a Junior Boy. He was one of those few Boys who will do more than what the officers taught him. He is a keen reader. He reads and finds out a lot about BB. He was one of those few who will tell his officer that there is a mistake in the BB Handbook or Berita Anchor. Darryn completed his senior section years as a Sergeantt and is now a Warrant Officer serving in the junior section. He was awarded the President's Man in 2006 at the Kuala Lumpur Pesta. Part ONE - Just a few simple steps
Introduction
It is quite worrisome that these days not many Boys are too keen on awards. One wonder why? Is it because that the topics are not interesting and attractive? Or is it because today's generation are just not willing to work for their awards? So Darryn Chiew has decided to share his experience on achieving awards and aiming for the President's Man. This article is divided into 3 parts, so do read all three parts to understand it before concluding that you are not interested in the President's Award!
Since you're spending time in BB, why not set a simple goal for yourself?
Written for Senior Section Recruits and Privates (and NCOs, if you must… =P )
This guide is long winded, but I hope you read it thoroughly if you are seriously interested in The Badge.
There are some who join BB not for the awards, but for the knowledge, friendship, fellowship and other reasons. Well, since you’re already spending time in BB every Saturday, why not set a simple goal for yourself? The goal I am referring to here is none other than the President’s Award. It will definitely require a little bit of extra effort, but your name will be in the history of the company forever! Just think of it as a long term goal in BB.
Rest assured, you don’t have to be a badge freak, and achieve 20++ badges in order to get your presidents. You just need 10 on the right side, and 5 on the left. This brings an average of 5 badges per year, for 3 years. Quite simple.
A few simple steps
Step 1 |
Get a BB Handbook, a piece of paper and a pen, and sit down in a quiet place without any distractions. (For privates and NCOs, bring along your badges/chevron and arrange them in front of you ). Use your handbook to refer to the requirements for President’s Award. It seems tough to understand at first glance, but don’t panic!! =) |
Step 2 |
On the paper. write down your current awards, and the awards that you still need to achieve in order to fulfil the requirements. |
Step 3 |
Work hard to gain the awards that you have written down in the paper. Keep the paper in a safe place where you can always look at it and keep in mind your goal. |
Step 4 |
Flexibility is the key here. Sometimes, your company awards system may not be suitable for your plan. Always refer back to your plan and compare it with the company awards schedule. Be flexible enough to make some changes to overcome problems such as lack of classes for the badge you need or other possible obstacles. |
Anyway, Lets have a look at the requirements in the next part.
